Setting Goals for the New Year

Now that the New Year is approaching, I am going to list some of my goals I want to achieve for 2010. Here they are:

1. Get paid more often for stand up comedy gigs.

2. Increase my residual income significantly with my writing and art.

3. Adopt a healthier lifestyle.

More specifically, I want to have enough income from stand up comedy, writing, and art so I can be financially independent and not have to rely on a day job. This is not something I expect to acheive within a month. However, I believe doing small things regularly will help build the bridge between where I am now, and where I want to be. Here is what I have done so far this week to help me:

1. Wrote an article on Ehow.com.

Out of all the passive income systems I have, this has been the most successful. Therefore, I am going to write articles for this website more often. To help me with my goal, I wrote an article yesterday. Here is the link to my newest article and my profile on Ehow.com:

How to File a Complaint with the Attorney General that Gets Results

John Griggs on Ehow.com

If you are a writer, Ehow.com is a great way to earn passive income. I would highly suggest joining this site, and write some articles. They have a very supportive community, and joining them is a great way to start and/or help your writing career.

2. Published new T-shirt designs on Zazzle.com.

I have had an online store on Zazzle.com for over a year. Until earlier this month, I had not sold one thing. However, now that I actually sold a T-shirt without advertising my site, I see great income potential. If you have artistic ability and/or a sense of humor, I would strongly suggest joining this site. You can design T-shirts, coffee mugs, bumper stickers, greeting cards, and more! I published a couple of new T-shirt designs last night, and will have more designs in the upcoming weeks. Here is the link to my online store:

3. Worked out at the gym and bought healthy foods.

To help me with my goal of a healthier lifestyle, I also worked out at the gym this week, and am eating heathier. I am going to make it to the gym at least once more this week. My goal is to work out at the gym three to four times every week.

In the upcoming weeks, I am also going to be more proactive in getting paid gigs with my stand up comedy. To do this, I am going to approach bars, nightclubs, and other venues to see if I can get more professional shows started in the area. In addition, I am going to make positive contact with other comedians and club managers to get gigs at comedy venues that are already established.

If you have your own goals, get them in writing. Your next step is to take action this week to take you closer to where you want to be. Identify where you are, and where you want to be, then build a bridge to make a smooth transition.

What are your goals for 2010?

Unintentional Humor from Barney the Dinosaur

In my last post "Being Made Fun of in School", I made the point that if you are being picked on in school, you don't have to deal with the bullies and jerks once you graduate high school. This is true in MOST cases.

However, if you're this poor kid in this video, it's not going to be so easy.

Being Made Fun of in School

I was picked on quite a bit when I was a kid. Other kids called me "fag", "spaz" - and other things that don't take any originality or brainpower to come up with. If you are in school, and you have kids picking on you, I advise you to do at least one of these two things.

1. Don't let the insults bother you.

This is easier said than done, but remember this... the other kids are picking on you because they don't feel secure about themselves. They want to get you upset to make themselves feel better. If you don't get upset, they won't see you as a target.

As Buddha says - "If someone offers you a gift and you refuse to accept it, to whom does the gift belong?”

2. Insult them back with something funnier.

If you do this, the bully will be totally embarassed and probably won't be able to reply with a clever comeback. They may get mad and want to fight you. Don't get physical unless you absolutely have to. However, if your insult is clever and funny enough, other kids will very likely laugh and take your side.

Whatever you are going through, remember this: it may seem like it, but school is not going to last forever. Once you graduate high school, status such as nerd, jock - etc. means absolutely nothing, and you won't have to deal with those jerks ever again.

Ladies - If You Want to Fantasize About Hot Men - Watch Our Videos!

Even with the invention of the Internet, there are still a lot of 1-800 and 1-900 numbers guys can call to fantasize with sexy ladies. However, there seems to be a lack of places females can call to talk to sexy guys! It's not fair!!!

I'm going to fix that! Soon I'm opening up a chat line for the females. I've made some commercials advertising our services. Ladies - check out our hot commercials. They're guaranteed to turn you on!

Adventures in Telemarketing

I am currently working at a telemarketing company. For those of you work in this industry, you know that some of the prospective customers that we call are not very receptive to our calls. Of course, those of you who work in inbound call centers know how hostile customers can get.

Earlier today, I called a guy who immediately started screaming at me. He said "Give me the biggest boss you have!" To which I replied "When you say 'biggest boss' are you referring to their size?" The customer was not amused.

Don't Be a Spectator in Life!

One problem with our world is there are too many spectators, and not enough people actually doing something. For example, lots of us watch sports on TV. If more of us would go out and actually play sports instead of watching them, we would be in much better shape.

Think of all of the time you spend watching television. Just think what would happen if you spent the same amount of time creating something of your own. The possibilities are endless!

I am definitely not going to be a spectator in life. I am going to be the one people watch. I rarely watch sports - I prefer to actually go out and play them. For the same reason, I rarely watch other stand up comedians - I prefer to perform stand up comedy myself and have people watch me.

For the same reason, I rarely watch pornography...

Making Improvements that Last

As 2009 comes to a close, you may be thinking of New Year's Resolutions for 2010. Perhaps you want to start exercising more and get in shape. Maybe you want to go back to college and/or get a better job. Even better, maybe your goal is to become financially independent so you don't have to get a job.

The truth is, most people don't stick with their New Year's Resolutions. Many of us join a gym in January, but by March are paying for memberships that we don't use.

Here are the main reasons why people fail to acheive a goal:

1. Taking on too much, too soon.

If you've been a couch potato for a long time, you are not going to become a competitive bodybuilder in a month. If you exercise too hard, you are going to sore for several days and not want to repeat that experience.

Perhaps you are a really busy person and can't seem to find the time to achieve what you want. If that's the case, first see what you can eliminate from your schedule. If you stop or reduce the time you spend watching TV, or playing online games.

If you are new to an exercise, start slowly. If you are sore for more than two days, you did more than what your body is used to. If this happens to you, lighten your workout accordingly, the next week. Gradually increase your weight/amount of time exercising to allow your body to adjust.

2. Not progressing fast enough.

There are many blogs that are abandoned because the authors of them don't see thousands of daily visitors to their blogs in the first few months. So they quit.

The same thing happens when people exercise, they see only minimal improvement in the first couple of months. So they quit.

Set REASONABLE goals that you have a very good chance of making. If you fall short, make the necessary adjustments and try again.

3. Lack of support.

If your goal is to stop smoking, hanging around other smokers all the time is going make your goal much more difficult to achieve. If your goal is to be wealthy, hanging around other people who are poor isn't going to help you.

I am not saying you should abandon your friends. What I am saying is this: Find people who have completed the goals you are wanting to achieve. Make friends with them. That way, you have a positive environment to reinforce what you are trying to achieve. Once you reach a goal, then help someone else achieve what you've accomplished.

Before you take off on an airplane, they always tell you to put on your own mask before helping someone else put on theirs. There's a reason for that.

4. Setting a date in the future to start a new habit, instead of starting NOW.

The future hasn't been written yet, and the past is already recorded. The only time you have control over is the present. I have written two articles that will give you ideas on what you can do TODAY to improve your future. Here they are:

How to Reach Your Goals by Making Improvements Today

Changes you can make now for a better new year

These articles should give you some ideas on what you can do immediately to start your path to becoming a better you.

Later this week, I am going to share some of my future goals with you, and what I am doing to make those goals a reality.

I wish you success on your journey!

Have Fun and Support a Good Cause in Scottsdale

Besides doing stand up comedy, I also like doing things that will help improve our world. One thing I do regularly is volunteer at AZRescue.org. A couple of weekends a month, I take one of their dogs out for a few hours to get some exercise. I also help RESCUE find suitable families to adopt their dogs.

RESCUE is an organization that saves dogs and cats from being euthanized in various pounds in Arizona, and then cares for them until they find a family. If you are in the market for a dog or cat, I would highly recommend getting one there.

Here's a fun way to support RESCUE - Papago Brewing Company in Scottsdale is launching a new beer this coming Tuesday called Bell's. For every Bell's beer you drink, $1 will be donated to RESCUE. Here is the information on the event:

Papago Brewing Company
7107 E McDowell Rd (SW corner of Scottsdale Rd and McDowell in the Papago Plaza)
Scottsdale, AZ 85257
Tuesday, December 15th from 6-8pm

Stop by and have a few beers there this coming Tuesday during happy hour. You will meet some cool people, help support your local watering hole, and help support RESCUE so they can continue to find homes for our dogs and cats. Get drunk, meet people, and support a good cause - what can be better than that?

Of course, if you do have too much to drink, make sure to have a designated driver or take a cab. Otherwise, you may also be supporting your police department.

Childhood Pranks and Growing Up

When I was a teenager, I used to make prank phone calls all the time. One thing I did was call Matchmaker - a dating service that was common back in the 80s. I remember one call I did... it went like this: "Hello, Matchmaker? I'd like 1000 books of matches please." That resulted in a quick hangup on the other end of the line.

Now that I'm an adult, I've pretty much outgrown making prank calls. I now primarily do pranks to people in person! Jim Holland is one of the comedians I team up with to mess with people.

This week's Comedy Video of the Week is Jim Holland getting overly excited from eating a taco at a fast food restaurant called El Pollo Loco in Phoenix Arizona. It is hilarious! Check it out....

How to Stop Telemarketing Calls

Many of us get annoyed when a telemarketer calls us. This is understandable. When I moved to Mesa Arizona in 2001, I would get many calls a day from telemarketers and bill collectors asking for the last person who had my number. It took numerous calls and emails to have some peace and quiet.

I now work for a telemarketing company. This is not a career for me, and I am not going to work in this industry for too much longer. However, the job market is not good, and this is the best job I could find for the time being. It is currently my primary source of income. Until I find a better job, I get fired, or I can significantly increase my income from my stand up comedy and my writing, I will stay put for a while.

Working at a telemarketing company has actually been a great educational experience for me. Many people get extremely rude and upset when I call them. Others resort to unoriginal and played out tactics to try to upset me. I will cover a few of these and tell you why you shouldn't do them.

1. Hooking up a fax machine and activating it when a telemarketer calls.

I actually do find this annoying. If the volume is turned up, it hurts my ears. However, keep this in mind - the telemarketer has your telephone number. He or she may return the favor... at four o'clock in the morning.

2. Yelling obscenities on the phone.

You've lost your cool, and you've let me ruin your day. Keep in mind, it very likely was your dumb ass that gave your phone number away. You insulting me or cursing at me isn't going to ruin my day... I'm used to it. In fact, me and my coworkers are very likely laughing at your stupidity.

3. Pretending to be interested to waste the telemarketer's time.

We do find this tactic slightly annoying. However, keep in mind YOU are actually wasting your time. Keep this in mind if you still choose to do this: we are still getting paid. You are not.

4. Asking "Why don't you give me your phone number so I can interrupt your dinner?" or one of its variants.

Believe it or not, this old "joke" does not get any funnier after it's done for the 5 millionth time. Come up with something original and funny instead. All of us could use a good laugh.

So how DO you stop or avoid telemarketing calls altogether? Follow these steps, and you too will be on your way to having very few, if any telemarketing calls!

1. Register your phone number at https://www.donotcall.gov/

I think everybody should know about this government service by now. However, just in case you didn't know about it - you're welcome!

2. Give your cell/home phone number to your friends and family ONLY.

Get a secondary phone line to give to businesses that ask for it. I use Google Voice - it is free, and I love it! Also, if you just type "free voicemail" in your favorite search engine, you'll have a lot of other options at your disposal.

3. Politely ask the telemarketer to put you on the "Do Not Call" list when they call.

Saying that you're not interested, or hanging up on the telemarketer won't guarantee that you won't get a return call. However, when you say "put me on the do not call list", the telemarketing company is legally obligated to not call you again unless you give them permission. It is also advisable to get the company's name and address, and the name of the person that called you. Any reputable company will have no problem with giving you this information. If they refuse to give you this info, or continue to call after you told them to stop, file a complaint with the FTC and your state Attorney General's office.

Final Thoughts

If you really want to stop telemarketing calls for good, I actually have an AWESOME solution. Why not publish articles or write a book that will help people who work at regular jobs become financially independent so they can quit their day jobs. If you write something excellent that helps me like this, I guarantee you will not get a telemarketing call from me ever again.

Hilarious Pranks on Video

Earlier this week, some friends and I pranked a pizza delivery guy. It was SO much fun, and we got it on video. I just posted the video on my main website here.

This was the first time I've done anything like that. I think the video turned out well, but there some things I've learned so that we can make the next one even better. I just posted an article on HubPages that will be helpful you if you ever attempt this. It is simply called "How to Prank a Pizza Delivery Guy". You can find the article here.

Here is the Comedy Video of the Week. It was done by Remi Gaillard - he is one of my favorite people to watch on YouTube. He dresses as Pac-Man and causes chaos in a supermarket. It is hilarious! Enjoy!
